Jeff is a very personable guy, but I've been wondering about his effectiveness for some time. He's been promising "break even" or "cash neutral" for what seems like 2 years (remember the dues increase?) and he's simply not able to deliver that. His presentations are often opaque at times, and it's troublesome to him say a $35k overage is a "rounding error" when we can't afford to pay for a $45k ADA elevator without asking the membership to cover it. He's been talking about stringent cost controls for over 2 years, and yet the $500m+ ferry situation happened under his watch. I know there are others involved but as CFO the buck stops with him. He lasted about 2 years at his previous positions since '18, and I'm wondering if this situation is a bit out of his ability to manage. It would be great if he stayed on perhaps with a bit more supervision.

It is not the responsibility of the members to come up with alternatives to cancer causing chemicals being sprayed near their homes. It is the responsibility of the people we pay to manage and run the course who ensure member and employee safety.

We live on a small, somewhat closed ecosystem and the golf courses here at Haig point occupy a large percentage of that land mass. I think we should formally object to round up being used, especially to kill the existing grass on the courses if the renovations eventually go thru. Good point for listening sessions coming up. I am currently travelling and saw this on TV. The links between Round Up and cancer continue to be established. The Board should not allow this chemical to be used on the property as many members, pets, children and employees would be exposed.

I spoke via email with Kevin Byrnes who was unaware the club has not posted the results of the member satisfaction survey. He pinged Adam Martin who said it will be released later this week prior to the listening session. As a reminder this survey was due on March 27th. Hopefully there will not be further delays.

I reached out directly to Kevin. Very prompt response. The Board will review our report on the survey results in their meeting on March 27 then release to the Membership shortly after. The most time consuming part of the process relates to the 10 questions allowing for members to write responses in their own words. We have thousands of responses to read, organize and categorize, then write an overview summarizing the responses for each of the 10 questions. It looks like these written responses will go thru two levels of filtration (committee and then board) but this is where we are in the process.

The golf committee is hand picked/approved by the board per the bylaws. Crazily enough, even all members on the golf committee aren't behind this. Even Ben Farmer on the board believes this golf spend is reckless. The committee has failed in its job of properly bidding this vanity project and seems cavalier about spending other people's money.

Mark I agree with you. Rees Jones celebrity worship has boxed us into a corner with regards to the bids. This is a vanity spend. Regardless of the necessity of all of these bells and whistles (learning center???), it should have been properly and objectively bid to multiple parties. Rees should not have been allowed to originate the process.

Sam, this is great. I don't agree with your conclusions, but this is very well written and thoughtful. $44,266 is the total proposed assessment cost to Signature Club members such as yourself, in addition to normal dues, fees etc. I think most of us acknowledge that some of these improvements need to be made. No question. However, many of the objections (as you have noted) pertain to the way the current management team (Doug Egly, Adam Martin, Tim Richards, etc) have failed their financial duties to the membership. We don't necessarily have to accept this as status quo. Many have suggested replacing the management team before moving forward on long range capital spending. Members simply want accountability and fiscal responsibility. As for myself, I would simply like to see a single year of break even finances before we tackle golf vanity projects that don't serve the entire membership. The club continues to lose money due to "keeping up with the (rees) joneses". And, you're right, we are different. Re pickle ball, thanks for putting that in perspective. I also agree it's probably a passing fad but as a % of the whole you are right. Might be worthwhile spend once we retire a bit more of our debt. Many thanks again. Great post.
