After having had a chance to sit down with Clay, and based upon his well thought out responses below, it is clear he is engaging with every facet of the club and has familiarized himself with the issues facing the community. He has a positive approach, which is grounded in accountability, transparency and compliance. Some of the things that really resonated with us about Clay include: 1.     An impressive resume with years of experience in both the operational and marketing functions of major global financial institutions.  He has real-world experience in managing a line of business under strict budgetary requirements. 2.     An understanding that those who have the responsibility of management (at all levels) must be accountable for their performance. This includes the CEO, CFO, Head of Marketing, and the Board. 3.     Actively talking with staff, members, committees, and Board members (including reviewing all committee minutes) to gain a better appreciation of the issues and challenges we are facing as a community. 4.     Key focus on ensuring that the promised segregated accounts are not (as in the past) used for other purposes; and 5.     Ensuring greater transparency and buy-in on strategic projects between the Board, the committees, and the Members. The club is at a crossroads. Those who have been in power managing the club for many years have not been successful, and their failure to properly set up and manage basic business practices has led to the financial deterioration of the club.  Furthermore, several Members of the Board, as well as the acting CEO, refuse to accept the Membership’s clear message that we lack confidence in their management. We believe that this election serves as a call to pass the management responsibility of the club to a new group of qualified candidates.  If the bailout assessment passes, the Members will be creating a fresh start for the club, so it is reasonable for the Members to expect a fresh start with new faces and new oversight. We all need to hope and pray that the nominating committee is looking at the "no" vote, the financial status of the club, etc. when they consider their candidates - and NOT "the sake of continuity"! This election cycle is CRITICAL!!! If the club gets a fresh start with this bailout, then the Members deserve a fresh start with leadership/BOD.

I’m guessing we won’t see results of the Annual Member survey before the “listening sessions”… FYI, the “Strategic Survey“ results have been posted.

Thanks for doing the follow up! I wonder how many comments they’ll need to read on this new survey. Should be interesting.

Good morning! There is another survey coming (as yesterday’s CEO letter indicated), out of which discussion/listening sessions will take place. I don’t think this was communicated clearly in the annual meeting as many, including myself, heard that the Board was going to “invite” people to contribute. All members who have expertise (especially where the proposals are concerned) and/or an interest in helping direct the club’s future are encouraged to speak out and contribute through this new survey and the discussion sessions. The membership has taken a great step in saying what it doesn’t want by voting down the proposals, and now energy must be focused on what it does want, and how we effectively get what we need. Keep positive and constructive momentum going by participating with input and ideas!

Bill, matt - and to whomever this applies: call me SILLY, DUMB, SMALL-minded, or any other name in the book. I’ve experienced a variety of tactics used to silence me when I’ve not been LIKE-minded about club matters. When you (management, et al) realize that this is what has brought frustration to the community, perhaps there can be steps forward collectively. Attacking people vs. issues definitely has been and continues to be an approach to control others, but change will eventually come. Kevin and I have shared with you and others that the projects are not the issue. Members want to be heard, but despite the many concerns voiced (listen to the open sessions and read the emails sent in) the Board is full speed ahead. My opinion (which I am entitled to) is that this Storybook demonstrates the Board’s pre-determined, assumptive mindset. I don’t need to point out the obvious-everyone can read and see the examples.

Great question! If they paid $3,000 for the Capital Investment Plan brochure (?), can you imagine what this must have cost? It had to have been written at least 6 months ago and it’s worded as if the projects are already done. SMH

matt, you are making assumptions. When we purchased, we had no idea the courses were being maintained so poorly, or that there was no money to maintain them properly (fill in the excuses.) In fact, we were told the opposite. The Long Range Plan at the time we joined (2020 vision) included, “commitment to the vision of a member owned, private, FAMILY ORIENTED community”, and “holding equity members dues at existing levels until sufficient net annual cash flow has been developed. At that time, begin a process of REDUCING annual dues as long as net cash flow targets are met”. (Emphasis added). Sadly, you are dodging the point, and your analogy is sorely off base. A better one would be - why do we need a Carnival Cruise to transport us from the welcome center to the island. The proposal is not maintenance and upkeep, it’s a complete redesign, worthy of Reese Jones bragging rights. We are full Signature members, and we enjoy occasional rounds of golf, but it‘s one very small part of the community’s appeal. Real numbers suggest that others feel similarly. I don’t believe anyone here opposes the need for the projects outlined, rather, there is concern that we are being asked to turn over $21M to the leadership who presided over the continued decline of the club’s assets, because the banks won’t touch us. I encourage you to revisit the previous Long Term plan and ask yourself how well the leadership has performed. Nowhere in the business world would this consistent underperformance be tolerated.

I’d also like to point out that this arrogant trend of golf advocates suggesting that if people don’t want a world class golf course they should leave their homes is toxic to our community. I’d suggest that people who want to live in a world class golf community should be the ones to leave and find one of the many world class golf communities in the country that can serve their needs. They can put their money toward another initiation fee elsewhere and not have to wait for the redesign/renovation - not to mention the additional cost and inconvenience of living through the additional road damage, etc. we will experience (and ultimately have to pay for) during the renovation! There are LESS than 10 foursomes of golf being played on average a day on both courses. Look at the capital investment (marketing) brochure. I find your approach is insulting, matt.

Sounds like this will be on the table before EOY … just crazy - I hope they do a thorough job of divulging the cost of infrastructure and marine along WITH the nice-to-haves that are on the table. We may not have transportation to the island to play on the new state-of-the-art pickle ball courts, which, by the way are going to look and sound fabulous next to the first tee box of the signature course we are sprucing up!! I’m so very scared about the voting membership who may not have a full picture of what’s going on!

I certainly hope the leadership hears our concerns at this point. I’ve only been here a year, but I am not at all comfortable with what I’m seeing. Perhaps this is a positive sign that they realize it’s not wise to ignore the membership?

I’m trying to get my husband signed up to no avail but it keeps blocking him.

The leadership in my opinion is acting like a dictatorship - and the only way to get back control is to take back control. We must attend meetings and we must speak up for our community. You have every right to reach out directly to the leadership, and yes .. they may try to intimidate you - but reference the information they are providing and ask.your.questions.!!!
