Joan Millers letter regarding fixed slate email
I would like to first thank all of you who signed my petition and provided me with more than enough signatures to allow me to run as a petition candidate. Most of you know by now that I am running for the Board of Directors. There were 6 members who volunteered to run for the Board, but the Nominating Committee chose only 3 individuals to run as a fixed slate for 3 seats. I was less upset that I was not chosen as a candidate, than realizing, like many of you, that our membership was not being given a choice of candidates from which to choose. This is the 3rd or 4th year in a row, that there has been a fixed slate. After speaking with many of you, I decided to run as a petition candidate. Jim Woodward is also running as a petition candidate. While I do not want to focus on the Nominating Committee's email sent to all of you earlier this week, I need to respond to some inaccuracies. First of all, in my view, this email was meant to discredit both Jim and I as candidates. I will let Jim speak for himself, but it was disrespectful to me as a long time member who has invested my time, talents and considerable amount of money to ensure Haig Point not only survives as a community but thrives for years to come. Seeing what happened to Melrose and Bloody Point gave me extra incentive to make sure HP was, and is, financially stable and attractive to new members. High speed fiberoptic cable was laid by Hargray in 2015, years before we had a fixed slate of candidates. The boom in lot and home sales is a tribute to all of our realtors who have worked tirelessly, in addition to the Covid epidemic and low interest rates, not because of a fixed slate of candidates. More important is why I think I can be an effective board member and represent a very diverse membership. I am involved in many different activities at HP including golf, tennis, fuskie fit classes, bocce tournaments, as well as serve on the Racquet, Recreation and Wellness committee. Bud and I are active socially meeting many new and long-time members. I have listened to what members like at HP and what is not working as well. I can offer diversity on the board not just as a woman but because I participate in many activities besides golf. I see myself as a listener and a negotiator which are valuable skills on the BOD. My hope is that having choices in our election will excite all of you. Please come out and vote. If you feel I can represent you well on the BOD, I would appreciate your vote. Please forward this email to other members I might have missed. One last thing: if you are available in person or by zoom, please come to the Meet the Candidates session on Thursday December 1, 2022 at 4PM in the Clubhouse boardroom. It is important that the Nominating Committee and the current BOD hears from all of you that having choices from which to choose is what you want for our elections this year and moving forward Respectfully, Joan Thomas Miller.
